what you are
actually playing
- The setup
everyone gets a word
Except one player, who gets a blank. Nobody knows who that is, including them, for about ten seconds.
- The tell
one clue each
Say something about your word that proves you know it without handing it to the faker.
- The talk
the table turns on itself
This is the whole game. Accusations, terrible reasoning, someone defending themselves far too hard.
- The vote
point at somebody
Catch the black sheep and the table wins. Get it wrong and they walk away insufferable.
how a round plays
- 1
deal
One code card each, face down. Everyone peeks at their own and nobody else.
- 2
clue
Going clockwise, one word or phrase about the secret word. Vague is safe and suspicious.
- 3
second round
Round two of clues, now that you have heard everybody bluff once.
- 4
accuse
Open floor. Argue, defend, change your mind loudly twice.
- 5
vote
Count of three, everyone points. The dice settle who scores what.

questions people ask
- What is a social deduction game?
- A game where at least one player has hidden information and everyone else is trying to work out who. The fun is in the conversation, not the components — most of the game is people talking, watching each other and getting it wrong.
- How many players do you need?
- Three is the practical minimum and it gets better as you add people. Most social deduction games hit their stride between five and eight, where there are enough voices to hide in.
- How is this different from Werewolf or Mafia?
- Werewolf and Mafia eliminate players, so whoever is out sits and watches, and somebody has to moderate instead of playing. Black Sheep keeps everyone in for the whole round and needs no host.
- What age do these work for?
- Twelve and up. Bluffing games rely on reading people and constructing a plausible lie, which younger players tend to find frustrating rather than fun.
